The Threat

DNC Chairman Howard Dean recently took to the Sunday morning talk show circuit to urge Democrats to choose a nominee by July 1st at the latest. The comment has been interpreted as a subtle hint to Senator Clinton to consider withdrawing gracefully from the playing field, Continue reading →

It’s 3am and Sinbad is on the Phone

It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep.
But there’s a phone in a mansion in Chappaqua, NY and it’s ringing.
Something is happening in the world.
“Hello Hillary, it’s me, Sinbad.
“Sinbad?”
“Sinbad, the entertainer. Remember? We partied in Bosnia in ‘96?
“Oh yes, I remember it very well.”
“Well, I was just talking to Sheryl, you know, Sheryl Crow. I thought I was losing my mind, but the thing is… well, she doesn’t remember any sniper fire either.”

“Sinbad, listen to me. That was the way it happened. There was sniper fire from the hills all around us. Our plane had to take evasive action. I mean, it was a warzone, Sinbad! And I was… I was presidential! I acted like a Commander-in-Chief!

Hillary’s Flak Jacket Bonafides

The amazing thing about Hillary’s Bosnia warzone story/fabrication/misremembrance was that she told the story over and over again — it was even a regular part of her stump speech! And many members of the press, especially those covering the Clinton campaign, were well aware that it was a total fabrication. “She misremembered” is the polite way some have characterized it.

Required reading on the story: Jonathan Alter’s The Tales Hillary Tells, in Newsweek’s April 7th issue, now online. Here is his remarkable closing paragraph: Continue reading →

It’s 3am and Senator Dodd is Calling

It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep.
But there’s a phone in a mansion in Chappaqua, NY and it’s ringing.
Something is happening in the world.
Senator Christopher Dodd is on the line:
“Hello Hillary,” says Dodd. “I was just thinking… would you be interested in running for Governor of New York in two years?”
“How could you, Chris?” says Hillary. “After all the work we’ve done together these last seven years?”
“I just think the people of New York really need you now,” says Dodd. “And oh yeah, I hear Rudy might be running!”

It’s 3am and Senator Leahy is Calling

It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep.
But there’s a phone in a mansion in Chappaqua, NY and it’s ringing.
Something is happening in the world.
Senator Patrick Leahy is on the line:
“Hello Hillary,” says Leahy. “I was just thinking… would you be interested in the job of Senate Majority Leader next year?”
“How could you, Pat?” says Hillary. “After all the work we’ve done together these last seven years?”
“Please don’t take this personally, Hillary,” says Leahy. “It’s just… you know, it’s just business.”

Momentum with Obama Going into Weekend

Reuters: Pennsylvania Senator Robert Casey Endorses Obama

Vermont Public Radio interview with Senator Patrick Leahy: “There is no way that Senator Clinton is going to win enough delegates to get the nomination. She ought to withdraw and she ought to be backing Senator Obama. Now, obviously that’s a decision that only she can make. Frankly I feel that she would have a tremendous career in the Senate.”

The Gore Factor

Yesterday Joe Klein, writing in Time, officially became the first pundit to go public with the notion of a “Draft Al Gore” solution to the Democratic dilemma. The concept is this: Obama and Clinton, both bloodied, limp to the convention in Denver, neither with the requisite 2,025 delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot. Continue reading →

Brooks on Hillary: “The Audacity of Hopelessness”

Today, New York Times Op-Ed columnist David Brooks, wrote an article called The Long Defeat, exploring the possible motivations behind Senator Clinton’s refusal to withdraw from a race that seems doomed. “She possesses the audacity of hopelessness,” says Brooks, in what was certainly the best line of the day. Bosnia, 1996: Hillary Dodges Sniper Fire

A CBS News report posted on YouTube takes issue with Senator Clinton’s vivid memory of her trip to the warzone in Bosnia in 1996.

“I remember being under sniper fire… we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles, to get into the base…”

CBS felt it was important enough to rerun a segment from 1996 which covered the very same trip to Bosnia, so well-remembered by the First Lady. Why? Well, it seems the Senator’s recollection employed a wee bit of hyperbole.

The Betrayal

It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep.
But there’s a phone in a mansion in Chappaqua, New York, and it’s ringing.
Something is happening in the world.

“Hello Hillary, it’s Bill Richardson. I know you’ve been trying to reach me.  I’m sorry to tell you that I’m endorsing Barack tomorrow.”
“Who the !%#$! do you think you are, to betray me this way!?”
“Hillary, please don’t make this harder for me than it already is.”
“After everything Bill and I have done for you!?”
“Please don’t take this personally Hillary. It’s just… you know… it’s just business.”
