Does Anybody Actually Believe Anything Terry McAuliffe Says?

Sam Youngman reports on TheHill.com today that the Clinton campaign is “on track” to raise $10 million in online donations in the 24 hours since the Pennsylvania primary was called in her favor. The “on track” quote apparently came from campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe, who also characterized the result in Pennsylvania as “game-changing,” and “historic outpouring of grassroots support.” On CNBC last evening Tim Russert reported that the campaign had sent its supporters an email asking for an immediate donation of $5.00. Russert’s take: they wanted to announce a big number of donors. Indeed, the campaign today announced it had received donations from 60,000 donors, supposedly 50,000 of which were new to the campaign. But at $5 a pop, that adds up to $300,000. At an average of $50 each, that would be $3,000,000, a far more realistic number than anything that comes out of the mouth of Bill Clinton’s hyperbolic golfing buddy.
