The only valuable thing about John “I’m So Pretty” Edwards’ endorsement, from the Obama perspective, was the timing, and only in the sense that it stole the spotlight from Hillary after her manhandling of Obama in the mountains of West Virginia.
Otherwise, the endorsement was meaningless. Edwards only showed that he knows how to count delegates, and finally figured out that the race was over, as anyone who watches Chuck Todd and John King could have told him three weeks ago. He long ago lost the opportunity to leverage his endorsement into a VP offer, or even a cabinet post in an Obama or Clinton administration. Does it make a sense for him to campaign in the Fall anywhere? His homestate of North Carolina? He failed to endorse before the state’s primary, and Obama didn’t need his help. Some pundits think he appeals to white Southerners, but they forget too easily his four hundred dollar haircuts — working class folks aren’t fooled by Edwards. Having a drawl doesn’t make him a good ole boy.
