UN Security Team Makes Brilliant Decision: Leaves Earthquake Victims to Fend for Themselves Overnight
Port-au-Prince, Haiti CNN — Earthquake victims, writhing in pain and grasping at life, watched doctors and nurses walk away from a field hospital Friday night after a Belgian medical team evacuated the area, saying it was concerned about security. The decision left CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta as the only doctor at the hospital to get the patients through the night.

Retribution from an Angry God? Uhhh, No, Says Danny Glover; Retribution from an Angry Gaia
“When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, [said actor Dannny Glover] this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I’m sayin’?” His obscene opinion would be bigger news if Glover had – in the manner of others – idiotically blamed a less-fashionable deity.

Targeted Taxation Strikes Again: A Tax for Everyone But the Unions
What happens when the irresistible force of the Democratic urge to tax runs up against the immovable object of Democratic loyalty to the labor unions? Another ugly deal in a health-care bill that already was a grotesquerie of payoffs to favored politicians and interests.
The levy in question is a 40 percent excise tax on high-end employer-provided insurance plans that — typically — has been sold as a tax on “the rich.” It’s called the “Cadillac tax,” a name redolent of corporate executives cackling in their Escalades over their cushy benefits.
The unions, which make it a point to negotiate generous insurance plans with their employers (to the point of bankrupting them), were chagrined to learn that for purposes of this tax, they’re among the rich. – Rich Lowry

Jean said he is on his way to Haiti via the neighboring Dominican Republic and asked people to pray for Haiti and for him.
For more information on how to help, go to Jean's Yéle Haiti website, which crashed this morning due to the volume of traffic.

Obama as Willie Sutton: “I Tax Banks Because That’s Where the Money Is”
“My determination to achieve this goal is only heightened when I see reports of massive profits and obscene bonuses at some of the very firms who owe their continued existence to the American people,” Obama said at the White House. “We want our money back, and we’re going to get it.”
The fee would apply to financial companies with assets of more than $50 billion. It would be based on bank liabilities and imposed starting June 30 on companies such as Citigroup Inc., American International Group Inc. and Bank of America Corp.
via Obama Says Bank Fee Aimed at Recovering Rescue Money (Update2) – Bloomberg.com.
Even though all of the banks except Bank of America HAVE PAID BACK THEIR TARP LOANS WITH INTEREST! Why are the auto companies being let off the hook? And what about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? (Companies that haven’t paid back the loans.)
“They’re not at an economic health standpoint yet that would allow us to do that,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

War is Peace, and Taxes are Financial Crisis Responsibility Fees
…President Barack Obama wants a new 10-year tax on the country’s largest banks…
The president planned to propose Thursday a levy of 15 basis points, or 0.15 percent, on the liabilities of large financial institutions to make sure every dollar spent from the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program to rescue Wall Street firms, auto companies and mortgage holders is either repaid or paid for.
A senior administration official said the tax, which officials are calling a “financial crisis responsibility fee,” would apply only to financial companies with assets of more than $50 billion. Those firms – estimated to amount to about 50 institutions – would have to pay the fee even though many did not accept any taxpayer assistance and most others already paid back their government infusions.

Thank God for the U.S. Armed Forces
Thank God for the U.S. Armed Forces. Because no one else can do this.
…the military has flown in hundreds of rescuers and has advance teams and assessment teams on the ground. The Coast Guard has deployed four ships as well as air support for evacuation efforts. The Navy destroyer USS Higgins, with about 320 sailors on board, arrived on Thursday.
Up to 3,500 soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg will be deployed in Haiti by Sunday. An advance group of about 125 troops will arrive on Thursday and 800 more will arrive on Friday. Another 2,200 Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, N.C., may arrive this weekend or at the latest by Monday for what initially is expected to be about a 90-day deployment.
An amphibious readiness group with three ships – the USS Bataan, the USS Fort McHenry and USS Carter Hall — will take the Marines to Haiti. This group can produce its own purified water. A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, with a crew of between 4,000-5,000 sailors on board, is on the way and will arrive in the area by Friday, with 19 helicopters on board. It has three operating rooms, several dozen hospital beds and can produce fresh water. But the much-anticipated hospital ship, the USNS Comfort, will not arrive until around Jan 22 with its 12 operating rooms and 250 hospital beds. The Pentagon says the Comfort is a slow-moving vessel and will need a week to arrive in Haiti. Two additional ships, the USS Underwood and the USS Normandy, are also headed to Haiti. The Bears are Awakening
Shadow Government Statistics lays out the sad details on the real number of American unemployed, for those who want to check it: http://www.shadowstats.com/ as do other economists.
This is not a jobless recovery with “stagflation” looming as was the case under Mr. Carter. This is 1930 all over again, with the worst yet to come.

Big Brother is Coming: Speeding Tix in the Mail
Tucked deep into the budget that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled Friday is a plan to give cities and counties the green light to install speed sensors on red-light cameras to catch — and ticket — speeding cars. Those whizzing by the radar-equipped detectors at up to 15 mph over the limit would have to pay $225 per violation. Those going faster would be fined $325.
…That would add up to big bucks for cash-strapped California — about $337.9 million through June 2011 — to pay for state courts. Every year after that, the program would generate nearly half a billion dollars, the Finance Department says. Local governments would get a share.

Next, expect state governments to realize how easy it would be to raise money using the EZ-Pass and other highway toll systems.

Brit Hume Commits The Cardinal Sin: He Professes a Preference for Christianity
Last Sunday, Fox News anchor Brit Hume committed The Cardinal Sin, in the eyes of the Media Elite, when he professsed a personal preference for Christianity, on the air, no less! What was he thinking!? The Great Keith Olbermann, the Emperor of Snide, and the Arbiter of All That is Politically Correct, handed down the verdict on his own program last night. Gateway Pundit had some pertinent comments on the incident, below:
MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann went after Fox News Channel’s Brit Hume for comments Mr. Hume made about Christianity this weekend. Olbermann’s comparison was so outrageous even his guest, Dan Savage, who was critical of Mr. Hume had to moderate Mr. Olbermann’s remarks.
OLBERMANN: (2:15 in) Isn’t this the classic thing that your mother probably also pointed out to you about never discussing religion in public? You can discuss religion in public. It’s like this that you’re not supposed to do it. This crosses that principle. Keep religious advocacy out of public life since the worst examples of that are Jihadists—not to mention guys who don’t know their own religions or someone else’s religion like Brit Hume.
