About

RedPhoneDiaries.com is a blog about politics and culture that was inspired by the 2008 presidential campaign, and specifically by Senator Hillary Clinton’s Red Phone Ad. The ad suggested that if and when the “red phone” in the White House rang at 3AM in the middle of the night, only she was fit to respond in a crisis, only she would be “ready on day one” to be our nation’s Commander-in-Chief. The ad implied that Senator Barack Obama wasn’t ready to be president, and it signaled a decision by the Clinton campaign to leave the issues behind and resort to fear tactics in an attempt to halt Obama’s growing momentum on the eve of the March 4th “Junior Super Tuesday” primaries in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont.

In the view of this writer, the ad was emblematic of the Clinton campaign itself and of its candidate’s ruthless ambition to become the first woman president of the United States. As a result of the Clinton campaign’s decision to go negative against Obama in a desperate attempt to gain the presidency for herself, this writer felt compelled to join the national conversation, and RedPhoneDiaries.com was born.

The transcript of the ad:
It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep.
But there’s a phone in the White House and it’s ringing.
Something is happening in the world.
Your vote will decide who answers that call,
whether it is someone who already knows the world’s leaders,
knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world.
It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep.
Who do you want answering the phone?

The observant viewer will note that the Clinton ad gurus chose to use a white telephone, and to have Hillary herself wearing a bright red shade of lipstick when answering it. Nonetheless it quickly became known — and will always be remembered — as the “Red Phone Ad.”
