On August 28th, 2008, the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King’ “I Have a Dream” speech on the Washington Mall, Barack Obama will take to an outdoor venue high in the Rocky Mountains to officially claim the mantle of Democratic nominee for president in 2008. 19,000 adoring fans in the Pepsi Center wasn’t enough, possibly because a good many of them will actually be Hillaryites. So the event is being moved outdoors to Invesco Field at Mile High (the former non-corporately named Mile High Stadium), where more than 75,000 are expected to attend. Shades of JFK, who accepted the Democratic nomination in 1960 at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles before a crowd estimated at 80,000. CNN has more details here.

The move is a logistical and security nightmare for the cash-strapped Democratic National Committee. But it will make for great television. The question remains… will Hillary be on stage at Invesco for a triumphant handraising, even if she is not on the ticket? Will Bill appear at all?

Barack Obama made the wrong call when he decided to opt out of the public financing system. Broder has it right. Aside from the immediate and short-lived hit he is taking in terms of “flip-flopping” or “breaking his promise” etc., he opted out of 85 million dollars, fundamentally, because he believes he can raise far more than that amount from his vast army of supporters, and from Hillary’s vast army of supporters. He also will need more than 85 million to match the money Republican 527s and the RNC will bring to bear on the election.

But the contrarian opinion here is that Obama will not get even close to the $300 to $500 million the CW estimates he is likely to raise. First and foremost, he cannot count on Hillaryites to open their checkbooks unless she is on the ticket. He will learn that in the coming weeks. Second, he underestimates two important factors when it comes to the supposed financing power of Obama Nation. Many will feel less motivated to debit their Visa accounts now that Hillary has been vanquished. The May fundraising total is evidence of this, having dropped to $21 million. But more importantly the $25 per month small donors might not have an extra dime left for Obama as the Summer of Inflation wears on, and their $25 goes towards bread and gasoline.

Warning signs are already here: An Obama for America email today is offering a free tee-shirt as an incentive to get the $25 donors up to $30. The June deadline nears…. Look for a disappointing number, and more pressure to grow to name Hillary as VP.

The message to the Clintons that is, from the Obama Campaign, as it announced the hiring of former Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis-Doyle. Jonathan Allen reports on the news today for CQ Politics. Obama spokesman Bill Burton said nothing could be inferred about Obama’s thoughts on a vice presidential candidate from the hiring of Solis Doyle…

But an unnamed “Clinton insider” said the message was clear, and the message was “[Expletive] You.” The Wall Street Journal had reported that Solis-Doyle, although once extremely close to Hillary Clinton, had not even spoken to the Senator since she was unceremoniously canned shortly after the February 5th Super Tuesday debacle. She was replaced by Maggie Williams, but continued to draw a monthly salary of twelve large through the end of April, reported Allen.

Meanwhile, Senator Clinton herself must have borrowed Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, and the axis of the Democratic Party slowly but surely turns to Barack Obama and, yes, Al Gore.
